Pressure cookers for dal, rice and rajma

Prices and ratings checked 5 November 2026 7 picks

Dal three times a week and rice most days is exactly what a pressure cooker is for. The decision is size first, then material, then whether you want an inner or outer lid.

Three litres is right for one or two people; five litres is the standard family size and the safer default if you cook for three or more. A five-litre cooker used half full still works — a three-litre cooker used for four people does not.

Ratings were read on 5 November 2026 and prices are approximate. All the cookers below are inner-lid unless noted.

Best overall

Prestige

₹2,449

4.3

Prestige Nakshatra Plus Svachh 5 L Hard Anodised Inner Lid

5 L · Hard anodised · Inner lid · Gas + induction

Good for: The default choice for a family of four

  • Deep lid with a spillage-control design — the most useful upgrade on this list, because it stops dal water running down the sides of the cooker.
  • Hard anodised body works on both gas and induction, and is light enough to handle daily.
  • ISI certified with a metallic safety plug and a 5-year warranty on the body.

Watch out: Prestige sells several Nakshatra variants — make sure the listing says Svachh, which is the deep-lid version.

3.9

Pigeon Favourite 5 L Aluminium Inner Lid Induction Base

5 L · Aluminium · Inner lid · Gas + induction

Good for: A first cooker, or a second one for a rented kitchen

  • The cheapest 5-litre cooker here that still works on induction, with a 5-year warranty and BIS certification.
  • Only 1.7 kg — easy to lift and wash, which matters more than it sounds.
  • Replacement gaskets and whistles are available everywhere, so it can be kept running for years.

Watch out: Aluminium, so do not store tomato or tamarind gravies in it overnight — decant into another vessel.

Hawkins Contura Black XT 5 L Hard Anodised Inner Lid
Best for heavy daily use

Hawkins

₹3,139

4.4

Hawkins Contura Black XT 5 L Hard Anodised Inner Lid

5 L · Hard anodised · Inner lid · Gas + induction

Good for: Cookers that get used twice a day for years

  • Hawkins build quality is the reason these cookers get handed down — thicker body, better-finished rim, handles that do not loosen.
  • The curved Contura body is easier to stir in than a straight-sided cooker, and the hard anodised surface shrugs off daily scrubbing.
  • Induction-ready with a 5-year warranty.

Watch out: Pricier than the Prestige for the same capacity — you are paying for longevity, not features.

4.5

Hawkins Triply Contura 5 L Stainless Steel Inner Lid

5 L · Triply stainless steel · Inner lid · Gas + induction

Good for: Anyone who avoids aluminium entirely

  • Triply construction (steel–aluminium–steel) spreads heat across the base and up the sides, so food does not catch at the bottom.
  • Nothing to react with any food, and no coating to wear off — the most durable option here.
  • Highest rated cooker on this list, and induction-ready.

Watch out: The heaviest pick, and steel needs a little more water than aluminium for the same result.

4.0

Pigeon Special Plus 3 L Aluminium Inner Lid Induction Base

3 L · Aluminium · Inner lid · Gas + induction

Good for: Couples, bachelors and hostel kitchens

  • Under ₹1,000, induction-ready, with an inner lid and standard spares.
  • Small enough to store in a kitchen with no spare cabinet space.

Watch out: Too small for a family of four cooking rice and dal together — buy the 5-litre instead.

  • Classic Miss Mary build — simple, repairable, spares available everywhere.

Prestige

4.1

Prestige Popular 5 L Aluminium Outer Lid

5 L · Aluminium · Outer lid · Gas

Good for: Gas stoves, and anyone who finds inner lids fiddly

  • Outer lid sits over the rim, so you can see the gasket seating and the cooker is easier to open and close.
  • The Popular is the longest-running Prestige line — spares will be available for a decade.
  • A common pick for people who cook rice in the cooker and want a lid that comes off cleanly.

Watch out: Gas-only. If you have or plan an induction cooktop, pick the Nakshatra or Pigeon instead.

3 litres or 5 litres

A 5-litre cooker holds about 3.5 litres of food safely, which is dal for four or rice for a family plus some headroom. It is the single most useful size in an Indian kitchen.

A 3-litre cooker suits a single person or a couple, and it heats faster. If you already own a 5-litre and want a second, buy a 3-litre rather than another 5.

Aluminium, hard anodised or steel

Aluminium is the cheapest and conducts heat evenly, but it reacts with acidic food over time and the surface darkens. Hard anodised aluminium is the middle ground: same cooking behaviour, tougher surface, no metallic taste.

Triply stainless steel is the most durable and the heaviest, and it is the only option here that is unambiguously induction-ready across the range. It costs the most and heats more slowly.

Inner lid or outer lid

Inner-lid cookers are lighter, easier to store and the common choice for home kitchens. Outer-lid cookers — the ones where the lid sits over the rim — hold pressure more consistently and are easier to open when hot.

Either is safe if the cooker has a pressure regulator and a safety valve. Do not buy a used cooker without checking both, and replace the gasket when it hardens.

Before you buy

Questions people ask before buying

Short answers to what comes up most often about pressure cookers for dal, rice and rajma.

Which pressure cooker size is best for a family of four?

Five litres. It holds dal or rice for four with headroom, and it is the size most Indian recipes assume.

Is a stainless steel pressure cooker worth the extra cost?

If you cook acidic food like tomato gravies often, or want induction compatibility and a longer life, yes. Otherwise hard anodised aluminium is the value choice.

How often should I change the gasket?

Roughly once a year with daily use, or as soon as the lid stops sealing or steam escapes around the rim.
