School lunch boxes that open easily and don't spill
A school lunch box is chosen by two people with different priorities: the child has to open it without help, and the parent has to trust that the curry will not end up in the school bag.
Capacity changes with age more than anything else. A five-year-old eats from 500–650 ml; a ten-year-old is closer to 700 ml; a teenager carrying a full lunch needs around a litre.
Every box below was chosen from listings that state a capacity and a lid type, and the ratings were read on 5 November 2026. Prices are approximate and change often.
Seven school lunch boxes, by age and build
Small boxes first, then the leak-proof steel builds, then the large one for older children.

4.5
Nayasa Marco Insulated Lunch Box, 650 ml, Steel Inner
650 ml · Double-wall insulated · Steel inner · Spoon and fork
Good for: A primary-school child who needs hot roti-sabzi at lunch
- The highest-rated lunch box here at 4.5, and it includes a spoon and fork — one less thing to remember.
- Double-wall insulation with a stainless-steel inner and a BPA-free outer, which keeps food warm without a hot exterior.
- 650 ml across two compartments is the right size for a child under ten.
Watch out: Two compartments only, and the print is a kids’ design — not the box for an office bag.

SOLARA
₹1,099
4.2
SOLARA Stainless Steel Lunch Box, 3 Compartments, Leak-Proof
3 compartments · Steel · Silicone seal · 4-sided clips
Good for: Carrying curry and dal without a spill
- A four-sided clip system with a silicone seal ring is the leak-proof design that actually works for gravies.
- Three compartments keep rice, dal and sabzi separate, which matters when everything is packed in the morning.
- Stainless steel inside, so no staining or smell from last week’s sambar.
Watch out: Steel boxes are heavier than plastic, and this one is not insulated to the same level as a vacuum tiffin.

ATTRO Hotmate Insulated Steel Lunch Box, 4-Sided Lock
Insulated · Steel inner and lid · 4-sided lock · Side container
Good for: Children who carry curries and gravies
- A four-sided lock with a steel lid as well as a steel body — unusual at this price, and better for heat retention.
- Airtight and leak-proof, with a side container for a snack or salad.

Watch out: Rated 4.0 and heavier than plastic boxes; the four clips take a moment to open and close.

Match the box to the child's age
Under about eight, a single 500–650 ml box with two or three compartments is easier than separate containers: one lid to open, and no loose pieces to lose on the playground.
From about ten, move to 700 ml or a clip-lock steel box. Teenagers who take a full meal need close to a litre, and a 1,200 ml three-compartment box is the practical ceiling before the bag gets too heavy.

Leak-proof beats insulated, most of the time
School bags get dropped and turned sideways. A four-sided clip with a silicone seal survives that; a push-on lid usually does not, and insulation around the lid does not stop curry from escaping.
If your child eats within three or four hours, a double-wall steel box keeps food pleasantly warm. If the gap is longer, insulation still helps, but the food will not be hot — pack things that taste fine warm.
Check the small parts before you buy
Spoons and forks clipped into the lid go missing first. A box with the cutlery moulded into the lid, or a side container that clips to the body, ends up being used for longer.
For younger children, look for rounded corners, no glass, and lids a child can open without a table edge. BPA-free plastic outer shells with a steel inner are the usual compromise between weight and durability.
